Full Description
The farmhouse consists of a mid-15th century timber-framed in-line open hall with an unusually large contemporary parlour to the south and a service bay to the north that was rebuilt in the 17th century. The two service doorways survive intact, with a maximum clearance of only 58 inches between their ground sills and arched heads. The walls of the house were raised by three feet in the late-19th century and the new low-pitched roof covered in pan-tiles. As part of the same refurbishment a small brick bake-house was added to the northern gable. This latter structure is of a type that remains common in East Anglia, and has been much altered by the removal of its bread oven and the insertion of new windows. A good 17th century timber-framed barn of three bays lies just 9 feet behind the south-western corner of the house (S1).
