Please read our .

Summary

A group of embanked pits, of a possible Second World War date, are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The features consist of a roughly oval pit surrounded by a mound. It is possible that these features are Second World War defensive or training features and are in close proximity to an area of further possible Second World War training features or explosive craters to the east (CUL 083). The features can be seen on aerial photographs in the 1940s and as low earthworks on the visualised lidar data.

Full Description

December 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A group of embanked pits, of a possible Second World War date, are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S2). The features consist of a roughly oval pit surrounded by a mound. It is possible that these features are Second World War defensive or training features and are in close proximity to an area of further possible Second World War training features or explosive craters to the east (CUL 083). A smaller mounded pit has been recorded at TL8195 7028 and it is possible that this feature relates to a smaller Second World War pit or a post medieval extraction pit. The features can be seen on aerial photographs in the 1940s and as low earthworks on the visualised lidar data.
