Full Description
September 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Five pits with surrounding banks are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S3). Four of the features consist of an elongated pit surrounded by a large bank, with the fifth feature (centred at TL 8309 7465) consisting of two roughly circular pits surrounded by a bank. The pits most likely relate to Second World War training features or possible Second World War forestry features possibly associated with Culford camp (WRW 032) to the south. The features are seen to have been in use on the 1940s aerial photographs (S1-S2) and survive as earthworks on the visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2015) (S3). The features are in close proximity to further possible Second World War pits to the east (WRW 093).
