Monument record WRW 094 - Possible Second World War pit features.

Please read our .

Summary

Two possible Second World War pit features and an area of possible small pits are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The features consist of two elongated pits, an area of very small pits and two areas of liner features. These features may relate to Second World War training features, possible Second World War forestry features possibly associated with Culford camp (WRW 032) to the south, modern forestry features or vegetation. The very small pits and linear features have since been levelled and the larger elongated pits survive as low earthworks on the visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2015).

Full Description

September 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Two possible Second World War pit features and an area of possible small pits are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S3). The features consist of two elongated pits which may relate to Second World War training features or possible Second World War forestry features, possibly associated with Culford camp (WRW 032) to the south. There is also an area of very small pits (centred at TL 8382 7352) which may relate to Second World War features or possibly a product of forestry. Finally, there are also two areas of possible linear features (centred at TL 8369 7341 and at TL 8380 7349) which may relate to vegetation or to features relating to the possible Second World War elongated pits
Due to the small size of the pits and the uncertainty in the origin of the linear features, these features have been mapped by extent. The very small pits and linear features have since been levelled and the larger elongated pits survive as low earthworks on the visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2015)(s3). The elongated pits are similar to further possible Second World War pits features to the north (WRW 092)
