Monument record BNH 172 - Possible Second World War training features

An area of probable Second World War trenches, pits and banks can be seen as earthworks (which have since been levelled) on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The features consist of a number of possible trenches, pits and banks which most likely related to practice trenches and possible weapons pits or defensive features associated with Second World War military training. The banks surrounding some of the trenches and pits may have related to spoil from their construction. Two of the pits in the south of the area (centred at TL8379 7678) may have related to natural or agricultural features. Due to the small size of some of the features and the scale of the aerial photographs, some of the pits and bank features have been mapped by extent. The features can be seen as earthworks in the 1940s (S1-S2) and have been levelled by the 1950s (S3). The probable military training features are in close proximity to further areas of Second World War training features and practice trenches approximately 400m to the south west (BNH 128) and approximately 750m (BNH 132) to the north. Due to a lack of adequate points when rectifying the photos, the locational accuracy of the mapping may have been slightly reduced.
