Full Description

Agricultural barn dating to the early C19 (c.1800). The 5-bay threshing barn forms part of a significant early C19 phase of development within the history of the farmstead which also included major alterations to the farmhouse. The farmhouse dates back to c.1500 but was later altered over several phases which had a significant impact on the fabric and form of the house. The farmhouse and barn are the only two surviving buildings on-site pre-dating the 1843 Tithe Map. The barn was constructed out of a high proportion of reused timbers varying in date from c.1500 to c.1800. Several rafters originate from an open hall house that had a coupled-rafter or crownpost roof structure. The source building had a hipped roof structure with two gablets for smoke extraction, as suggested by 3 surviving rafters. The assemblage of timbers that makes up the wall framing of the barn consists of reused studwork, wallplates, rafters, braces, and posts that had been recut for use in the barn as well as c.1800 and later timbers. A good number of these appear to be c.1500. Modern repairs are also evident within the barn (S1).
