Full Description
The stables and coach house date from the early 19th century and were probably constructed when the vicarage was re-built in 1821 They are built from good quality Suffolk red brick, probably manufactured locally, the exterior faced in flint rubble with brick quoins. The joinery (windows, doors, stall partitions, hay chute) has been carefully designed to be both functional and decorative reflecting the status of the incumbent.
The stables and attached coach house are situated approximately 15 metres SSW of the Old Vicarage, the host building. The building, which dates from the early 19th century, is aligned on a N/S axis approximately parallel to Pump House Lane which lies to the W. The building is of red brick construction, faced with flint on the main E elevation. It is single storey with a loft and a slate roof. There is a single flue red brick stack to W of the ridge, heating the harness room in the stable. The coach house, which is attached to the N elevation of the stable, is aligned E/W and forms a cross wing projecting to the E. Attached to the N elevation of the coach house is a single-storey lean to which also dates from the 19th century but has been recently refurbished to form a gym and storage area. This part is clad in black horizontal boarding on a brick plinth with boarded double entrance doors (E) and a slate roof. Immediately S of the stables is a small detached early 19th century building which is of the same date and style as the stables and coach house. The ridge is aligned E/W and it is single storey with a loft although with a smaller, approximately square footprint. This building was designed as an ancillary to the stables and coach house and may have served as a loose box with hay loft or granary above.
This includes the quality of the brickwork and the flint facing with red brick dressings on the principle façade the design and fittings of the loft and main stable doors and the semi circular Diocletian stable windows. These are original and of high quality joinery in keeping of the early 19th century (S1).
