Full Description

Monitoring identified a layer of slag material was recorded as being part of a smelting operation that was carried out on site. The First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1886 shows that an iron foundry was at this location and the slag layer was evidence for the foundry works. The layer was seen throughout the majority of the footings and was interpreted a layer created from smelting iron on a workshop floor, probably of 19th century date. Below the slag deposit an occupation layer overlay a riverine deposit and showed that the area had once been flooded and under stagnant water conditions, probably throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods (S1).
