Summary

The Ness had been fortified in Henry VIIIs reign, but the old battery had been washed away shortly after 1715( see TM59SE306). In 1781 a new battery was constructed mounting four 32-pounders and two 9-pounders. It was an irregular hexagon in plan. A ditch surrounded it on all sides, and a blockhouse covered th gorge. By 1870 the battery, like its predecessors, had been washed away.
