Full Description
The cropmarks of the medieval/post medieval Hawks farm, field boundaries, ponds and trackways can be seen to the south of Melon Green on EH Reconnaissance aerial photographs taken in 2011. The cropmarks consist of two adjoining crofts connected to trackways leading both north (defined by broad ditches and called Hawks Lane) and south (defined by narrow ditches). The cropmarks of the ditches that form the boundaries are approximately 4m wide and are suggestive of a moat, though they are similar in width to the ditches that define Hawks Lane that connected the farm to Melon Green. Many of these features including the settlement of Hawks are depicted on the 1885 Ordnance Survey map (demolished by 1904) though only fragments of these broad ditches survive as ponds on the croft boundary by that date. In addition the cropmarks indicate a slightly larger eastern croft that accommodated the full width of Hawks Lane and a continuation of the trackway south to the parish boundary with Lawshall.
