1779 wreck of French privateer which stranded near Orford; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`Newcastle, July 3, 1779...They write from Orford, in Suffolk, that a French privateer, called the ENTERPRIZE, belonging to Dunkirk, was, by a strong tide and gale of wind, drove on shore just below that town, and entirely lost, as were most of the crew.' (1)

NB: ENTERPRIZE is an anglicized spelling and ENTREPRISE, the conventional French spelling, has been included as an alternate form of the name.
