Full Description

1690 wreck of craft which stranded within the manor of Walton-cum-Trimley; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty

`Vessel lost at Walton-cum-Trimley, within the manor there. Sir John Barker, Lord of the Manor.' (1)

'Feb. 18. Whitehall...The King is informed that, about a month since, a vessel was wrecked upon the coast of Suffolk, within the manor of Walton-cum-Trimley, whereof Sir John Barker is lord, and that some soliders belonging to Landguard Fort have, by your order, seized the said vessel, broken her up and carried what cargo they could into the fort. His Majesty commands me to let you know he is satisfied that all wrecks within the precinct of that manor (except on any part of the ground on which the fort is built), do of right belong to the lord of the manor, and therefore, in case the said wreck was not upon any part of that ground, as is suggested, his Majesty would have you give orders forthwith for the delivery of the said wreckage to Sir John Barker, and that, for the future, he be permitted quietly to enjoy the benefit of all such wrecks as shall happen within the said manor. ' (2)

Source (1) identifies `Walton' as Walton-on-the Naze and accordingly includes this vessel in Essex (CA); however, Walton-cum-Trimley is a suburb of Felixstowe. Source (2) states the wreck was in Suffolk.
