Full Description

BRITISH CRAFT, 1744
Status: Casualty

At this period the Julian Calendar was still used in Great Britain, with the New Year beginning on 25th March. Therefore the dates from 1st January to 24th March (inclusive) in modern reckoning are one year later than the year printed on Lloyd's List, and the date of loss has been amended to 1744 to reflect this. Source (3) however follows source (2) in expressing the date of loss as 1743 (Old Style).

`The ELIZABETH, Ratcliffe, from Newcastle for Dunkirk, was lost the 24th of February near Southwold, and all the crew perished.' (3)

Master: Ratcliffe
Crew Lost: All

Date of Loss Qualifier: A
