Full Description
The survey identified evidence for several linear / curvi-linear anomalies which are suggestive of archaeological features. A Roman Road is believed to cross the west of the site but the responses from modern features dominate the data for much of the area along the assumed route. Some anomalies broadly correspond with the assumed alignment of the road and could be related to it but the full extents of the road or definite confirmation that the anomalies are related to it cannot be confirmed because of the modern features / activity. Anomalies relating to probable linear archaeological features and an oval-shaped feature have also been identified but it cannot be certain if these are related to, or contemporary with, the Roman Road.
There are a large number of isolated positive responses throughout the site, some of which are relatively large. This type of response can be can be caused by discrete infilled features(both anthropogenic and natural), areas of burning / industrial activity or deeper buried, relatively modern, ferrous or fired material. In this instance it is possible that some of the larger isolated responses could be related to archaeological features / activity, such as pits, or industrial features, although a modern origin for some of them cannot be ruled out. Other smaller responses are more likely to be natural in origin or related to deeper buried relatively modern material but it is possible that some of the smaller responses could also be related to archaeological features or activity.
The modern features ot activity include buried pipes / drains, a cricket square and areas of made ground / tipped material. It should be noted that the magnetic disturbance and strong responses from modern features / material could mask anomalies from other sub-surface features in their vicinity.
A large number of anomalies of uncertain origin are present. Some of these could relate to parts of archaeological features / archaeological activity but others could be associated with modern activity / material or agricultural activity. Generally, these responses are weak or fragmented and do not form any obvious patterns and so it is difficult to determine their cause with any certainty (S1).
