Full Description
1781 wreck of French privateer which stranded near Southwold after being chased by an English cutter; a wooden sailing vessel.
Status: Casualty
`Admiralty Office, April 12, 1781. Extract of a letter from Lieut. Berkeley, of the LIBERTY cutter, to Mr Stevens, dated Yarmouth Roads, April 10. "I yesterday chased and run on shore near Southwould (where she is lost) a small French privateer called the CERF VOLANT, mounting 2 carriage guns, 6 swivels, and some blunderbusses, manned with 18 people."
