Full Description

SCOTTISH SMACK, 1838
Status: Casualty

`This Leith smack lost her rudder and was seen lying at anchor close
to the Barnard, flying a signal of distress. The lifeboat launched
under Lt. Carter in a strong east-north-east gale with snow showers,
and proceeded to the vessel. Although the smack was leaking badly,
the captain and crew refused to leave her, and after taking a woman
and a boy out of the vessel and signaling the yawl SEAFLOWER to stand
by the stricken vessel, the lifeboat landed the survivors at Benacre,
where the lifeboat remained at the request of the captain, in case
she was wanted again.' (2)
