Full Description

ENGLISH BRIG, 1842
Status: Casualty

`The vessel was seen to be on the Inner Newcome at 1pm. A wind of
hurricane force had whipped up huge seas and the lifeboat was only
launched with great difficulty. Lt. Carter, assisted by H Disney and
19 beachmen, had to use all their skill and strength before they could get to the stranded vessel. Seas were breaking right over the
lifeboat, and once Disney was washed overboard, but holding onto the
safety line, was soon drawn on board again. Letting go his anchor,
Carter veered the lifeboat down on the vessel and managed to get a
line across to the crew, who were in the rigging. By this means seven
of the eight men on board were hauled through the surf into the
lifeboat, a distance of about 20 yards. When her anchor came home, and then only with difficulty, was the lifeboat worked out of the
dangerous position she was in, having to pass under the bowsprit of
the wreck in order to get clear, making for the shore, the Pakefield
lifeboat saving the master.' (2)

`...ran on the Inner Shoal this moirning during a tremendous gale at south; crew saved.' (3)

`Lowestoffe, 27th Jan: The THOMAS OLIVER, Mills, and not the THOMAS HOLLOWAY, Myles, as stated yesterday, which was on shore on the Inner Shoal, has fallen over on her beam-ends and disappeared.' (4)
