Full Description

Southwold Pier was built in 1900 by A. Fasey to W. Jeffrey's designs. Its original length was around 800 feet (243.8 metres) but was later truncated by storm damage to 370 feet (112.7 metres). During the early 20th century, the pier was a popular port of call for steamers from London, Clacton and Great Yarmouth. In 1934, the T-shaped pier-head was destroyed during storms. In 1936, a two-storey pavilion was added at the shoreward end. The pier was sectioned as a defensive measure during the Second World War. The pier was considerably damaged during storms in 1955 and 1979. In 1998, the pier facilities included a restaurant, a gymnasium, a bar, amusement arcade and a theatre/ballroom. Between 1999 and 2001, the pier was extended and the T-shaped pier-head was restored. The restored pier provided a pier history exhibition, shop, pub, restaurant and amusement arcade
