Full Description
109 High street is a dark red b1ick laid in Flemish bond, with a plain tile roof It presents a long elevation to the High Street but is not deep on plan. There are brick quoins at the corner width the side alley and at the junction with Sun Court. The front elevation consists of six bays, marked at first floor level by double hung sliding sash , windows "with marginal lights. The space between the two northern windows is slightly narrower than that between the other windows. The brick closers around the window openings are chamfered, and each window has a cambered head with a central keystone. On the ground floor are three modern shop fronts, each occupying two bays, with plate glass windows and projecting boxed fascias. There is evidence of modern rebuilding around the right hand (northern) shop front, which also contains the present entrance. The tile roof has an eaves gutter and at its southern end is built into the side of the roof of the cross wing of Sun Court. On the northern flank elevation's to the side alley is of plain brick, with a small opening in the gable. One of the brick has graffito bearing an un decipherable signature and a date of 1887.
The building does not appeared on the 1839 Tithe Map, however there are some internal features of 18th century character. In 1853 the property was a butcher's shop. The present character of the building is largely of the 1870s or 1880s (S1)
