Full Description

The privy is a single storey building approx 3.3 metres wide by 1.7 metres deep and maximum 2.25 metres high and is divided into three cubicles. It is approximately 6.4 metres from the rear wall of the kitchen lean‐to and 2.8 metres from the side boundary between nos 25 and 26 London Rd (although this boundary moved south, away from the privy, during the twentieth century).
The building is constructed from local soft red bricks, laid in stretcher bond (half a brick thick) using lime mortar and has a mono‐pitched roof of red clay pantiles dropping down at the rear of the building (north). The roof has 12 rafters, 4 per cubicle, and appears to have had simple mortared roof verges, although the extent of ivy growth over the roof prevents a full understanding of its exact details. Its main elevation, which faces south (sideways), is of nine inch brickwork and contains three door openings with half brick arches, one door per cubicle. The doorframes and doors are of timber, painted dark green. The four plank doors are ledged but not braced and originally opened inwards, with ventilation gaps top and bottom. The two easternmost doors have since been modified to open outwards, and the dividing wall between these two cubicles has been removed. The remaining partition wall contains a small fixed window. The side and rear elevations are featureless. The east elevation is hard up against another outbuilding and so cannot be photographed, but is a mirror image of the west elevation. There is a gap in the internal floor finish where the partition has been removed. The internal concrete floor is slightly lower than the level of the slabs that make up the external pathway (S1).
