Full Description
The survey has recorded numerous anomalies the majority of which are due to recent agricultural activity. In addition, a large number of linear and curvilinear anomalies of some archaeological potential, interpreted variously as forming enclosures, trackways and field boundaries that pre-date historic maps, have also been identified. Most of these anomalies have a very weak magnetic signature and are often fragmentary or discontinuous with no clear pattern. Hence many of these anomalies have been interpreted as of possible archaeological origin with only the more clearly defined enclosures and trackways interpreted as probably archaeological. These findings correlate with cropmark data and confirms that the site lies within a landscape of extensive field systems which have been previously recorded on the local historic environment record. The number of potentially archaeological anomaliesrecorded indicates that there was clearly sufficient magnetic contrast for the detection of sub-surface archaeological features. However, the magnitude and resolution is such that it is possible that certain types and size of feature (small or shallow) may be difficult to detect. It is therefore considered that the archaeological remains may be more extensive than the survey has recorded. However, it is considered probable that any extensive areas of archaeological activity, particularly settlement activity, would have been identified, if present. Overall, based solely on the results of the survey, the archaeological potential of the site is assessed as low and moderate in the immediate vicinity of the identified enclosures (S1).
