Monument record FAS 090 - Possible undated linear drainage ditch and modern trackway at Lark Barn, Bury St Edmunds

2025: Monitoring revealed one possible linear drainage ditch which likely connected to the River Lark and aided water management over the flood plain. However, no artefacts were retrieved and the date of the ditch is unknown. Other features identified in the monitoring related to a former modern trackway within the substation and southwestern cable excavation. A made ground bank for the access road was recorded along the southern area of the land parcel. The artefactual evidence from these areas consisted of modern CBM, pottery, glass, metal farming equipment and nylon rope which was not retained. A deep flood deposit and clay layer were evidence that historic flooding has occurred in the northern area of the land parcel due to the proximity of to the River Lark. No remains associated with the Scheduled Monument (NHLE Ref. 1006018) or the Battle of Fornham (FSG 030) were identified within the monitored area (S1).
