Full Description

The house, which is aligned on a NE/SW axis facing The Green, has two projecting rear wings with gable ends in between which is a a flat-roofed infill. The building is two storey with a slate roof hipped at both ends. The butcher's shop, attached to the NE end, is single storey with a shallow pitched roof. Attached to the rear SE elevation of the shop is a broad single storey, concrete block extension, rendered externally, with a shallow pitched slate roof.

Purbrook House is faced in yellow brick laid in Flemish bond with pilaster buttresses at the corners and a string course at first floor window cill level. The house has three bays with a central single storey porch, on either side and above which are ground and first floor mid- 19th century sashes with 3 X 4 panes and flat arch heads. There is a cross-axial stack at the ridge to the right of centre and an axial stack and a second cross-axial stack on the rear wing to the left. Both stacks have two flues and a dentil brick band. The SE (rear) elevation and the extension to the rear of the shop are faced in colour washed cement render. The render extends over half of the NE and SW side elevations.

The NE elevation has a two pane late 20th century, two pane casement lighting the small attic above the butcher's shop. The rear elevation of the house has 20th century small pane French windows to the garden at the SW end and late 20th century 4 X 3 pane sashes at ground floor level in the house and shop extension. The first floor of the house has late 20th century 3 X 4 sashes. The extension to the shop has central late 20th century timber double doors in the SE elevation and two late 20th century sashes and a 20th century part glazed door in the SW elevation.

Purbrook House underwent extensive refurbishment between 1970 and 1990. The exterior render on the SE elevation and part of the side elevations was applied at this time, the front porch was added and the single storey outbuilding attached to the rear elevation of the butcher's shop was rebuilt. The area between the two rear wings (shown with a flat roof on the roof plan) was probably infilled at this date. At the same time an outbuilding between the one attached to the butcher's shop and the stable block (shown as a linear range on a NW/SE axis against the E property boundary) was demolished. The rear wall of this building was re-built to form the E boundary wall but the concrete floor and brick wall footings remain. The stable block was re-built c.1994 butthe cart lodge which stands opposite the stables, adjacent to the W boundary, remains relatively unaltered (S1).
