Full Description
The Rectory is Elizabethan in origin but has been much added to and altered particularly in the Victorian period. The entrance front is to the east and approached by a drive that runs past the outbuilding. It is surrounded on the south and west sides by a small moat or lake and is otherwise set in landscaped grounds.
The outbuilding is a detached, two storey (low-rise) Victorian coach house and stable building independent of the main historic house and separated from it by an area of lawned garden screened by yew trees on the eastern side. It is flanked by a later carport and is set down at a lower level from the street. The upper storey is open to the rafters and vacant; the lower storey used for storage of garden equipment. It is of note that the building was damaged by fire in the 1980s and at that time much of the roof and the first-floor structure was replaced, and internal joinery lost. It is of solid masonry construction with diaper pattern brickwork on the entrance (north) front and an asymmetrical arrangement of cruciform windows and boarded doors with a large pair of carriage doors on the western side. The flank elevations are in a similar style but the rear (south) front is essentially blank painted brickwork with the exception of two original openings, possibly former air vents, now glazed, on the eastern side at high level. This façade was formerly fronted by a lean-to glass house. The roof is pitched with two gabled dormers on the north front. The composition is informal and in appearance, dainty (S1).
