Full Description

2025: Geophysical survey identified a complex array of varying strength linear, curvilinear, discrete, and amorphous interlinking anomalies. Features include a possible curved double ditched trackway surrounded by a series of interlinked rectilinear enclosures containing internal divisions and possible pits and post holes. Areas of burning activity were also identified which might indicate settlement and or industrial activity. Possible ring ditches were also identified potentially representing Bronze Age barrows. It is considered likely that these anomalies are indicative of a multi-phase settlement and associated agricultural enclosures. As the anomalies appear to follow the line of a trackway, it may be the remains of a ‘ladder’ or ‘ribbon’ settlement. It is likely that this set of features date from the Iron Age to Romano-British period and potentially into the early medieval. The overlapping nature of the boundary anomalies indicates repeated agricultural use of this area. Some of the linear features may therefore be much later field boundaries and from as late as the post-medieval period. The ring ditches may date as far back as the Bronze Age, adding another possible phase of activity to this site. (S1)
