Please read our .

Summary

A possible small ring ditch of unknown date is visible as fragmentary cropmarks on aerial photographs. The ring ditch measures approximately 11m in diameter and is located in the valley of the River Glem. A larger curvilinear enclosure or ring ditch (SHER HWN 015) is also visible immediately adjacent to its west. A prehistoric date for both sites is feasible but not certain.

Full Description

May 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
A possible small ring ditch of unknown date is visible as fragmentary cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The ring ditch measures approximately 11m in diameter. A larger curvilinear enclosure or ring ditch (SHER HWN 015) is also visible immediately adjacent to its west. A prehistoric date for both sites is feasible but not certain. For example, the larger enclosure or ring ditch is large enough to be the encircling ditch of a Bronze Age round barrow, but the diameter of the smaller ring ditch (11m) is more typical of a round house. The juxtaposition of a round barrow and round house so close together seems unlikely.
