The Warbanks. Linear Earthworks.
Section (a): TL 8888 5359-8900 5380 circa 230m long.
Section (b): TL 8902 5308-8923 5357 circa 530m long.

1581: Section (b) named Le Barowe (S4).
1843/4: Tithe Map:- Section (a) formed Cockfield/Lawshall parish boundary. Section (b) named as War Bank (wood).
1886: The warbank is considered to be a fragment of a Roman encampment. 'A bronze bust found near it, was lent me by Mr Prigg. I took it to the BM - thought to be late Roman work' (S1).
'Within an encampment known as the Warbank, was found a small bronze bust of a female figure. The hair plaited in 12 twists & fastened on top of head with bow. Also the bronze handle of a knife or mirror with a crowned female head at the end.' (S3)(R4)(R5)(R6).
1906: Description of earthworks (Section (a) had a bank on the E side of the ditch; Section (b) had its bank on the W side of its ditch). Explanations ranged from waterways, cattle ways to military works (S2).
1909: Plan & sections (R1).
15.2.1978: Section (a) is being ploughed but is still just visible. N part of Section (b) shows as a soil mark in a ploughed field, S portion survives as a hedge. S portion of Section (b) forms the Cockfield/Shimpling parish boundary.
1976: Plan & sketch sections by OS (R2).
Warbanks proposed for scheduling in 1978, reiterated 1981 but not taken up.
1998: Whole area of the Warbanks E of A134 (i.e. COK 001) metal detected with negative results (S5).
