Full Description

'Ixworth Cross'
Gold pendant cross with cloisonne garnet decoration, a gold disc brooch with filigree ornamentation and iron fittings, found by a man 'raising gravel' at Stanton. The iron objects consisted of 24 staple like objects and 4 pieces with twisted ends, as if inteneded for handles - some pieces had wood adhering to them. The finder reported that there was 'the appearance of decayed wood but not the least appearance of a skeleton'. The objects were bought from the finder by Joseph Warren of Ixworth, 1856. Warren caused the finder to sift through the earth in which the objects were found, but nothing else was found. Warren thought the iron objects to be coffin fittings (S1).
In 1858 an apparently Bronze Age burial was reported to Warren, having been 'found by a main raising gravel from the Pit on the left hand of the turnpike road going from Ixworth to Stanton' (S1) - ? same site.
Details and illustration in (S2).
