Full Description

Two pits with black earth, Rom pottery and portions of lava quernstone found during the laying of the water main along the NW side of the High Street in 1936/1937. At first thought to be part of a road ditch, later pipe laying on the SE side of the High Street did not reveal a parallel road ditch, so the conclusion was that these were rubbish pits (S1).
Iron Age pottery and eight flint flakes came from these pits.
