Full Description
Possible Rom cemetery (cremation) found here in 1810 by a man digging for brick earth on the field near Pakenham windmill. Described as a square place full of pots set in rows, a great many of them of a dark colour, several of which had covers. None preserved. One is figured on a chart in the Watling Collection (Layard Collection) at Ipswich Museum. It looks Rom but this could possibly have been a Sax site (S1) (S2).
In February 1952 Mr Bryant, farmer, advised Basil Brown that in ploughing nearby he had found substantial wall footings at a depth of 3 feet - these were eventually destroyed - at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S3) (S4).
