Monument record MDM 010 - Hulk's Grave

Legend has it that it was the grave of a giant, as apparently the grave was so large. The site has gradually been eroded by the road and has now disappeared. Situated on the boundary of three parishes, Withersdale, Mendham and Weybread, it was believed to be the place of execution, the vagrants of the parishes were hanged there and buried close by.
Local tales say that it is haunted:-
Mr How of Withersdale remembers that children were always told to stay away from the spot as it was haunted by the spirits from the burial site. Miss M Daniels, aged 85, told me about the cottage that was at the side of the road, it had a well and 5 sheep were drowned in it. The cottage and well were demolished in about 1920, a signpost now marks the spot. She also told me that there was a footbridge and ford at the crossroads, but after the great flood of 1912 the bridge was improved and the road altered. The area around the site seems to have been fairly built up with cottages close by on the fields called Brick fields, the mill was also at the top of the hill. Mr B Elliott of Withersdale recalls when he was 7 or 8 years old (1927-28) that he was with his father coming home from Diss in a pony and trap. As they approached the area of Hulk's Grave the pony stopped and refused to move, his father had to lead the pony until they had passed the bend in the road before the pony would trot on again. Brian could feel the hairs on the back of his neck rising as it was 1230 am Christmas Day and he remembered that he had always been told to stay away as it was haunted (S2).
