Full Description
Coin hoard. Located by scatter of coins found metal detecting, ploughsoil turned over to locate remainder and main group excavated (S1). Total 204 silver denarii, Roman Republican and early Imperial, terminating with one of Caligula AD 37. Suggested probably post-Conquest, possibly AD 60 (this period having a scarcity of silver coinage). Numismatically interesting for the large (50) group of Tiberius (S3).
Main group (138 coins) found at base of ploughsoil in the top of a linear feature in the base and lower body sherds of a grey ware jar, wheel thrown. There were also sherds of another jar base associated; other miscellaneous sherds in the feature mainly handmade IA. A second feature also contained IA pottery (S2).
Also IA.
Excavation(S4)
The site lies within a large IA and Rom scatter - see SUT 022.
