Full Description

"Chapel Field, Occold - Benningham, site of ancient chapel" (S1). Out of use as chapel by 1291.
Ocolt with the Chapel of Beningham is assessed at 17 pounds 6 shillings and 8 pence in 1254 (S2) and at 20 pounds in 1291, when "anciently required to find curate to preach in the now extinct chapel at Benningham" (S6). Tithe apportionment does not list field names but the only area of glebe land listed outside the village area of Occold is plot number 147, of 2 acres 10 perches, at TM 171700 (S3). A rectangular building (about 8m by 5m) is shown to the W of plot 147, at the end of trackway cropmark OCC 007, on OS maps in 1926 & circa 1958 (earlier OS maps not checked) at TM 1720 7005 (S4) and on an aerial photograph of 1973 (S5). Building, no longer shown on map of 1984 (S4) is said by land owners to have only been a wooden shed in `horsefields'. Plot 147 formerly (now part of larger field) known as `Little Glebe' (S7).
