Full Description
Bruce Mitford considered the site to be the probable location of Sax cemetery where urn was found and recorded in Davy M S in BM (see RLM 006). After study of the maps he instructed Basil Brown in June 1949, to dig trial trenches 15 feet x 5 feet in the area surrounding (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), as he thought the urn may well have been found during construction of cottage. (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). During the excavation of the eastern trench, Brown noted and sketched a large area to the S of the trench where there was evidence of sand and gravel removal and he assumed that the skimming method used during extraction may have damaged any pottery in area. During 1949 excavation no pottery or artefacts were found (S1)(S2). Close to (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), pottery IA (may be Sax) found 1952, see RLM 010 (02466).
