Full Description

(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) brought in (to Norwich Castle Museum) a very nice bronze handle in the form of a Bacchus ? head with thick beard from a very large bronze vessel. The thing was beautiful and the decoration and metal seemed perfectly "Roman" but the square-headed rivets on the back suggested to me that it may be an C18 copy from Naples, or one of those excellent workshops ... Donald Bailey of the BM was perfectly happy with it as Roman ... (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) brought it in to Norwich Castle Museum on 19 April 1979. He had it from the owner, (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). When he first enquired (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) that the handle was dug up from under an apple tree. The second time, however, (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S1). (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)

Previously WSS Misc.
