Full Description
During construction of Cliff Road Estate 1935-1938, many Rom pottery sherds were found in trenches dug by Gas & Electricity Boards and Post Office Telephones. Most appear to have been 1.5 - 2 feet below ground surface and were found in the southerly part of Cliff Road. Sherds of Samian ware, grey ware and red mortaria are listed from many plots in Cliff Road and one fragment of roofing tile was found opposite plot 17 in 1937. For complete list of finds, see Basil Brown archive. He was given list in 1951 by R Meehan, surveyor in charge of Cliff Road development, who stated he had retained some finds, whilst the rest were on loan to IPSMG (S1).
