Full Description

September 2013. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of a former type 22 pillbox in the grounds of the former Old Hall, Gunton (LWT 022), which formed part of a defensive group of pillboxes in Gunton Park (LWT 200), which itself originally part of wider defensive network, consisting of an extensive line of anti-tank cubes, barbed wire obstructions and associated defences (see LWT 045) is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The pillbox is centred on TM 5405 9567 and may have been surrounded by an embankment, although it is feasible that this is a pre-existing landscape feature. The wider system forms a perimeter defence or ‘stop line’ around Lowestoft. See LWT 194-200 for other nearby components of this defensive system.
