Full Description

A World War II barrage balloon site is visible on a 1944 aerial photograph (S1) at TM 5453 9463. Various tethering points can be seen encircling a central point. This feature does not appear on earlier aerial photographs from 1940 & 1941.

The site of a World War Two barrage balloon mooring, an area of military training and air raid shelters in the grounds of The Denes High School is visible on aerial photographs (S2-S3). In addition to the barrage balloon mooring already recorded at the site previously, see above entry. There are extensive areas of sub-surface air raid shelters, indicated by their entrances. These are located along the edges of the school fields to either side of the barrage balloon and have been mapped by an ‘extent of area’ polygon. The addition of a large curved profile hut to the side of the southern school property would indicate that the site has potentially been requisitioned by the military. Numerous small trenches, weapons pits and minor training features are visible along the margins of the site.
