Full Description
July 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of the South pier Coastal Battery at Lowestoft is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This is outside of the current project area (falling within the previous Suffolk Coastal NMP project) and therefore has not been included within the mapping. The two gun houses, which housed 12-pounders (S2) and associated buildings and shelters are visible on the extreme of the pier.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 23rd July 2014.
South Pier Battery located at TM 553 925. It was built by 1941 and operated as an anti-motor torpedo boat battery. It was armed with two 12-pounder quick-firing guns. The battery is referenced as being manned by 215 Battery of 514 Coast Regiment until 1942, then by 215 Battery of 544 Coast Regiment until February 1945. (3)
Aerial photography from 1968 shows that the battery has been dismanted and the site had undergone dockside development. (4)
