Full Description
An aerial photograph from 1946 (S1) shows some earthwork features on a low hill to the north-west of Blythburgh. The more southerly of these features is a pair of pits, which appear fairly well weathered. The are close to the site of a gravel pit marked on the 2nd Ed County Series OS map from c1904, and would thus seem to be former gravel extraction pits. About 100m north of these are more 'pit' features and a clear zig-zag trench. The exact function of these more northerly 'pits' is not clear, but the trench is presumably of World War II date, while the other depressions may be connected to the extraction activity in this area, or they too may be World War II date practice trenches. Only the more southerly disused gravel pits are faintly visible on aerial photographs from 1980 (S2), possibly due to the fact that the rest area has become covered with quite a lot of trees and scrub
