Full Description
A fish trap of probable Post Medieval date can be seen on aerial photographs, taken in September 1945, in the inter-tidal zone to the south of Stonner Point, Sutton parish at TM 2905 4434. The fish trap consists of groups of four posts, presumably wooden, arranged in lines in order to create a roughly v-shaped structure which points out into the channel. The structure was probably a "kiddle" - a type of fish trap where nets were hung between wooden posts - and would have trapped the fish as the river channel shrank towards the centre of the estuary at low tide. (S1) The remains of the northern arm of this fish trap can be seen on aerial photographs from 1948 but the feature is not visible on any of the later photography available. (S2)
See SUT 127 for more fish trap remains to the north of this site and SUT 129 and SUT 130 for other structures nearby which may have once been part of this fish trap complex.
