Monument record SLY 089 - Pits of unknown function, of World War II date.

A row of pits of World War II date is visible on photographs from 1944, centered on circa TM24613403. The pits run for a distance of about 240m, from circa TM24583414 to TM24643391. On average they measure 2.5 by 1.5m, and are more closely spaced towards the north of the row, than at the south. Their function is not clear from the photographs, but they are located on the edge of a sports ground which appears to be associated with the naval base that covered much of Shotley Gate at this time, and are very close to the air-raid shelter recorded in SLY 088. In addition they appear to have been filled by 1946. Therefore, a military or defensive use seems likely. (S1-S2)
