Full Description

A section of sea wall is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork bank roughly 250m to the east of Iken Hall, centred on circa TM41185615. The visible extent of the bank is approximately 650m long. A roughly 250m long stretch of bank is visible on 1943 photographs running west to east from circa TM40875607 in the west where it might be associated with a rectangular earthwork enclosure (see IKN 020), to circa TM41135607 in the east, where it appears to connect with more sea-bank running north-south (S1). The east-west section of bank is marked on the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, and may be on the 1837 first edition, but the copy available to the survey is slightly unclear. However, it appears to be less substantial on 1965 aerial photogrpahy, though whether this is from neglect or deliberate destruction is unknown and it is not marked on the current base map (S2). The north-south length of sea-bank is also marked on historic maps, including the 1837 and 1888 ordnance Survey 1st editions (S3-4), suggesting a Post-Medieval date for its construction. However, on the available photography the northernmost extent is obscured by tree growth and cannot therefore be plotted from aerial photographs. This section of bank is marked on the current base map, which suggests it continues roughly for a further 200m.
