Full Description
A possible Roman or Iron Age salt production site is visible as a 'red hill', a patch of red soil contrasting against the brown earth of a ploughed field, on an aerial photograph of October 2002. The possible red hill is centred on circa TM42725606, on the edge of the reclaimed salt-marsh, roughly 200m to the north-east of Yarn Hill in Iken parish. Due to the placing of a later field boundary across the site, part of the red hill earthwork appears to have survived while the rest has probably been destroyed by ploughing. The date and nature of the site cannot be confirmed without a site visit. A known red-hill site lies circa 1500m to the west (see IKN 008). (S1).
