Full Description
Six World War II circular emplacements, probably earthwork in construction, are visible on aerial photographs of Sudbourne marshes from 1943 onwards, centred on circa TM44425319. The earthworks are between 4 and 7m wide, forming roughly circular enclosures of 14 to 16m diameter. The earthworks enclose central areas of 20-30 square metres, 4 to 7 m in diameter. The precise function of these emplacements is unclear from the photographs. They may represent the location of a Light Anti-aircraft battery, or be related to the training activities of Sudbourne battle school.
By 1945, the emplacements are much eroded and appear to be associated with the Heavy Anti-Aircraft (HAA) battery located immediately to the west (S2). For information relating to Sudbourne Battle school and the associated HAA site, see SUE 063. By 1948 this field has been returned to agricultural use and the emplacements have been destroyed by ploughing (S3).
