Full Description
A Heavy Anti-aircraft Artillery battery of World War II date is visible as a range of structures on aerial photographs of Orford parish, centred on circa TM42144947. The battery has not been built by May 1944 and is first visible on aerial photographs of September 1945. It is composed of a central road or trackway almost 450m in length, that runs from circa TM42114964 to TM42134922. On either side of the track is arrayed a number of nissen hut type structures that would have formed the accommodation huts, administrative blocks and munitions stores for the battery. The southernmost end of the road forms an arc approximately 90m in length, along which four gun emplacements are arranged. The guns appear to have been removed by September 1945. (S1, S2)
Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft Diver battery in the Diver Strip at Chantry Marshes. It was armed with four 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns equipped with Predictor BTL, and Radar AA No.3 Mark V when it was deployed here on 24th November 1944, and was manned by 663 Battery of the Independent Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It formed part of 102 Heavy Anti Aircraft Brigade deployment (S3).
