Monument record GED 023 - World War II temporary army camp.

A possible World War II temporary military camp is visible on aerial photographs as a number of structures in the vicinity of Gedgrave Hall, centred on circa TM40454860. The structures may be temporary structures approximately 12 x 8m in size, similar to those that were established in the grounds of Sudbourne Hall during the activity of Sudbourne training area or 'Battle School' (see SUE 063). The camps in the grounds of Sudbourne Hall have not been mapped as it lies outside the area of this survey, but the activities of the training area may have extended into Gedgrave parish and this camp may be related in function to those in Sudbourne or to the three Heavy Gun batteries located in this area (see GED 020, GED 026-7). Alternatively, they may simply be related to agricultural activity such as the construction of hay hicks, but the possibility of temporary or disguised military features cannot be discounted. (S1)
