Full Description
A possible extensive temporary camp of World War II date is visible on aerial photographs of December 1943 as probable tented structures located in a field about 200m to the south of Banters Barn Farm, centred on circa TM38614710. The scale of the available photographs is such that it is not possible to see the possible structures in any detail, but they appear to vary in size from approximately 3 x 6m to circa 6 x 7m. The camp may have been associated with the 79th armoured division who were stationed at Boyton and who used the practice range to the east from about April 1943 (see BOY 024). The structures have been removed by September 1945, but it is possible to see some of their prior locations as possible parchmarks in the field (S2). A larger structure is still visible at this time to the south of the field at circa TM38674693, but this may simply be a hay rick It is likely that the neighbouring house, Frogs Hall (now demolished, see BOY 015), would have been requisitioned as officers' accomodation. The features may simply be hay bales awaiting construction into larger hay ricks, but at this time the possibility of disguised military features cannot be discounted.
