Full Description
A possible temporary military camp is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 as a number of possible structures and earthworks, cented roughly on TM38034670 in Boyton parish (S1). The features are visible about 365m to the north-west of Boyton Hall farm, in a field on the eastern side of a track that leads onto Mill Lane to the north. The possible structure is circa 10 x 6m in size and on either side of it to the north and south are visible low, roughly circular features of about 8m diameter, that may be structures or earthworks. A thin feature, possibly a bank, is also visible about 3m to the north east of the tent. A number of similar sites are visible in the immediate area (see BOY 041). It is unclear from the photographs what function the tent or it's associated features performed but it was possibly related to the military training sites or coastal anti-invasion defences that are visible in this area (e.g. see BOY 024, BOY 035). An alternative interpretation the features may simply be hay ricks but at this time the possibility of military features disguised as ricks cannot be discounted.
