Full Description
An earthwork bank located in the saltmarsh of the Butley river, possibly a relict Medieval or Post Medieval sea bank or causeway, is visible on aerial photographs at circa TM392505, Chillesford parish. The bank is circa 270m long (including an interruption of circa 20m) and is on a north west to south east orientation. The existing sea wall lies about 40m to the east of this bank and may have replaced it, if the older bank suffered from serious or repeated breaching. The location of a number of possible oyster beds to the east of this bank (see CHF 024) might suggest that it is Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date. (S1-3)
